Happy Birthday USA! - 4 Healthy Holiday Tips

America the beautiful...

From THE DICK CAVETT SHOW. September 18, 1972.

As we celebrate our Independence this weekend, it can be hard to maintain our freedom from the temptations of overindulgence. In fact, I was asked by someone just yesterday how to maintain a diet while still having fun at a holiday party. As I always say: you CAN have your beignet and eat it too! So here are some tips on how to keep it together over the long weekend:

Think (And Eat) Ahead

If you know you are going to an event where the food options won't be the most nutritious, try eating something before you get there. You may not have to prepare an entire meal, but a healthy snack or small plate of goodness can help you limit your indulgences.

BYOF

If you are going to a family gather or BBQ at someone's house and think you'll be tempted, just bring your meal with you. This is especially helpful for people with dietary restrictions or allergies. As a bonus, you will quickly make friends with anyone else around who is in the same boat as you and trying to fight the food demons.

Get In An Early Workout

One of the pleasures of being off of work is being able to sleep in.

If you can manage to rise early, go for a run or get in a morning workout. It's a great way to get your day started and switch up your routine if you'd normally be working. Remember this will NOT magically erase the giant plate of BBQ that you eat later, but it can help you remain in a healthy mindset throughout the day.

Have Fun and Don't Be So Hard On Yourself

As always, we don't want to be to extreme about any one way to do something. Keep in mind that cheating is okay as long as it is done in moderation. Being healthy is about being balanced so don't be afraid to have fun!
