Holy Mackerel: The Benefits of Omega-3's

When you think of fat, it's usually nothing but bad thoughts, however not all fats should be treated the same! Omega-3 fatty acids are an important part of a well rounded diet. These fatty acids are an essential nutrient because they cannot be made within the body. They give a number of benefits, but primarily aid in brain and heart health. Omega-3s reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and improve brain health.

There are three main types of omega-3s: EPA, DHA, and ALA. DHA and EPA rich foods are the best source of omega-3s, as they are the easiest to use in the body. ALA is mostly used for energy, but it is also converted to EPA and DHA in small amounts. For this reason, DHA and EPA are important to ensure adequate omega-3 levels.

  • EPA and DHA  are found in Seafood sources such as:

    • Fish, seaweed, or algae

    • A supplement if fish is not part of your regular diet

  • ALA is found in Plant sources such as:

    • Chia seeds, Flaxseeds, Walnuts, Soybeans, and Many more!
